Dell (previously known as Dell Computer, and now known as Dell Inc.) is one of the leading computer manufacturing companies, and has been for many years.
Founded by current Chairman and CEO Michael Dell in 1984, it has grown from a very small company (with headquarters in college-dormitory) called PCs Limited into the corporate giant that we all know today. Starting with the Turbo PC, which was the first computer designed by the company and went on sale in 1985, the company did so well (grossing sales of $73 million dollars in its first year of operation), that it changed its name to Dell Computer Corporation in 1988 and began to expand its operation from domestic to worldwide.
Dell has continued to grow over the years, becoming the largest personal computer manufacturer in 1999, surpassing Compaq.
However, when Compaq merged with Hewlett-Packard, it wrested that title away from Dell in 2002, but Dell regained the number one billing a few years later. Dell held on to that rating until 2011, when it was surpassed by Lenovo. In addition to manufacturing PCs (both desktop and laptop versions), Dell is known for the manufacture and sale of quality servers, software and IT consulting and services.
Products
While branching out into IT services and consulting as well as business server technology, Dell is still known for its quality personal computers, both desktop and laptops. It offers the OptiPlex, Vostro, N-series, Precision, Inspiron, Latitude, Studio and XPS lines of computer systems as well as the Power Edge business sever line. As Laptop Lagoon is focused primarily on laptops, we’ll discuss the two of the most well-known laptop offerings from Dell, namely the Latitude and Insprion lines as examples of what Dell Inc. has to offer.
Latitude
The Dell Latitude line has been designed for the business end of the market and is known for its reliability. It uses standardized parts which are available for several years beyond normal support life.
Inspiron
The Inspiron line began its run as a series of laptops which were designed for the consumer market. In particular, it was aiming for those consumers who were interested in an entry-level, budget conscious computer.
Dell Inspiron Laptop
Unlike the more business-oriented Latitude line of laptop computer systems, the Inspiron line caters more to the consumer and offers a wide range of options, especially with regards to features. HDMI ports are featured on most current models and the features of the line cater more to the consumer rather than to the business. They are a little more colorful – as you can see by looking at the photo. The Inspiron series can be ordered in just about any color!
