Media Player|CyberLink PowerDVD 14 Ultra

Well, it’s about that time again when the major video software publishers start releasing the latest version of their software – be it media player, video editor, or what have you. CyberLink seems to be the first out of the gate with PowerDVD.

They are introducing the fourteenth version of the award-winning media player this week. Version 13 has had a good run, and while that run is far from over, it looks as if it will have to give way to Version 14 fairly soon.
I have not had the chance to get a hold of PowerDVD 14 as of yet, so this blog post is purely introductory.
I have used CyberLink products for a few years now, and have been generally satisfied with them. Whether it be the media player PowerDVD, or the video editing software PowerDirector, I have found the software to be reliable and stable on my computers. I am expecting the same from PowerDVD 14.This format also allows for a faster download and the ability to store a year’s worth of movies into your computer.

What’s In The Box?

Version 14 incorporates all of the features available in PowerDVD 13 plus the latest media enhancements. Here is what CyberLink has to say: (taken from the web page):
“Immerse yourself in high quality media entertainment with PowerDVD’s TrueTheater technologies, the latest media formats, smart cross-platform media transcoding and more. PowerDVD integrates its award-winning media playback features, mobile apps and cloud services to provide a seamless entertainment ecosystem that lets you enjoy all your favorite media content anytime, anywhere and on any device. ”
This is to be expected when one is announcing the latest version of one’s media player.
In addition to the True Theater technology (which was included in Version 13), PowerDVD 14 now supports
High Fidelity HEVC/H.265 Video format. This format has been designed to offer better resolution and an enhanced video experience with super-high pixel fidelity and video resolution.

Audio

PowerDVD 14 also offers excellent audio for any media. The following is a list of what Version 14 offers in the way of audio:

• Enjoy HD audio using WASAPI Exclusive Mode that configures audio devices to match the source format thereby avoiding quality degradation
• Lossless pass-through for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio
• Support for HDMI 1.4 for multi-channel high definition audio
• Enjoy cinematic soundtracks with 7.1 channel audio
• Expand 2-channel audio to 6.1 channel sound with Dolby Digital EX
• Experience 5.1 surround sound on headphones and stereo speakers with Dolby Virtual Speaker and CyberLink TrueTheater Surround
• Play music in lossless formats including FLAC, APE, and high quality DTS 24/96

I mentioned earlier that True Theater technology was included here (as well as in Version 13).
CyberLink’s PowerDVD 14 page has all the details as to what formats are supported and a breakdown of the enhancements, as well as system requirements. We won’t put the list of minimum requirements here as I usually do, but we do recommend having more of everything, from video graphics card, CPU, RAM in order to get the best performance from this media player.

Summary

To sum it up, it looks like Version 14 Ultra will be an excellent media player. PowerDVD 14 comes in several different varieties: Standard; Pro, Ultra, and Live. The Live version is tied in with an on-line Cloud subscription, which seems to be the way many software publishers are going these days. The Standard and Pro versions have fewer features than the Ultra.
